The Orchestra of
St.Bartholomews
Under its dynamic and
gifted conductor, Robert Trory, the Orchestra of St.Bartholomews - first
class in every respect with its leader Hugh Bean and many well-known players
from Londons finest orchestras - gave a sparkling performance of the
Marriage of Figaro Overture which had the packed audience on the edge of their
seats.
After such a start, Robert Trory
and the orchestra were joined by Jonathan Carney for a deeply-felt and very
moving account of the Brahmss Violin Concerto. If at first the initial
tempo seemed a mite too slow, this soon expanded into a broadly-conceived and
utterly absorbing reading, superbly sustained and penetrating
throughout.
Mendelssohns Italian
Symphony ended proceedings in exhilarating and breathtaking style.

Musical Opinion
After the interval Robert
Trory and The Orchestra of St.Bartholomews gave a passionate
interpretation of Beethovens Seventh Symphony. The measured opening and a
firmly rhythmical development had some of the audience unable to restrain their
spontaneous applause. The famous second movement flowed in a stream of living
beauty; the scherzo was like a great swirling dance; the finale set off like a
race which, ending in a great crescendo, brought a prolonged standing
ovation.

The concert on 18 November
fully lived up to the Orchestra of St Bartholomews growing reputation. On
this occasion, led by Gabrielle Lester, they opened with a dazzling account of
Glinkas Ruslan and Ludmila Overture, taken by Robert Trory at a sparkling
pace and played with much virtuosity and sensitivity. They were then joined by
Anthony Marwood for a very fine performance of Bruchs G minor Violin
Concerto and the concert ended with an equally impressive reading of
Dvoraks New World Symphony, which Trory commandingly conducted from
memory.

CONCERT FOR INDIA IN
LEWISHAM
A somewhat extraordinary event
took place at Lewisham Theatre in South-East London. This was described as The
Mayor for Lewishams Concert for India, given by the Orchestra of St
Bartholomew under Robert Trory with the famous bass Willard White. The concert
was arranged at very short notice, the Orchestra containing very many familiar
faces from the leading London orchestras, every musician, as well as the
Theatre staff, giving their services for the relief of the Gujurati people in
the Indian Earthquake Disaster Appeal.
The result was an unqualified
success. Robert Trory is a conductor I greatly admire, and he began with a
noble account indeed of Wagners Meistersinger Overture, followed by three
excerpts from Tchaikovskys Eugene Onegin, the Waltz, the Polonaise and
Prince Gremins Third Act Aria, which brought Willard White to the stage.
This magnificent artist was superb, as also in Devant le maison from
Berlioz Damnation de Faust and Ol Man River from Showboat. He was
brilliantly accompanied by Robert Trory and the Orchestra and this fine concert
ended with a breathtaking performance of Mendelssohns Italian Symphony.
